
The Saskatoon Health Region Orthoptic Program is a two-year, comprehensive, accredited program of academic and clinical instruction in orthoptics and related ophthalmic studies. Set in a clinical teaching environment, orthoptic education is taught through didactic instruction and clinical exposure by an experienced staff of orthoptists and ophthalmologists.
The orthoptic curriculum includes:
- Anatomy
- Physiology
- Pharmacology
- Optics
- Diagnostic testing
- Systemic disease
- Ocular motor disorders
- Orthoptic treatment
- Ophthalmic testing procedures
- Principles of surgical treatment
- Principles of non-surgical treatment
- Genetics
- Child development
- Learning disabilities
- Clinical research methods
Upon successful completion of the two years candidates are eligible to
become nationally certified orthoptists through written, oral and
practical examinations administered by Canadian Orthoptic Council.
- Admission to the Orthoptic training program requires a bachelor's degree. The application process begins with review of a written application including:
- University transcripts
- Three letters of professional recommendation
- Personal statement
This is followed by a personal interview of eligible candidates. Final selection occurs in April. Students are accepted every second year.

Joel Hyndman BSc, OC(C)
Joel grew up in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. After completing a Biology degree at the University of Regina, he was accepted to the Saskatoon Health Region Orthoptic Program and graduated from the program in 2005.
Joel spent the next two years as a Low Vision Specialist with CNIB in Saskatoon. In 2007, he accepted a teaching position at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Joel returned to Saskatoon in 2008 and has been practicing Orthoptics at Saskatoon City Hospital ever since.
Katie Sandecki BA, OC(C)
Katie obtained a Bachelor of Arts (honors) at the University of Saskatchewan in 2000, followed by Canadian Orthoptic Council certification in 2003. She has worked as an orthoptist in Canada and the USA since becoming certified.
She has been working in her current position at the Eye Care Centre in Saskatoon since 2008.
A TCOS member, Katie enjoys learning new and innovative approaches to Orthoptics and Ophthalmology and is interested in research, especially studies related to pediatric patients.
Michael Walby BSc, OC(C)
Michael Walby is a recent graduate of the Saskatoon
Health Region Orthoptic Program at City Hospital. Upon obtaining his Certification in June of 2011 he began working in the Orthoptics department at City Hospital. Before entering the field of Orthoptics Michael obtained a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Saskatchewan.
Jocelyn Zurevinsky BA, OC(C)
Jocelyn is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She holds current certification with The Canadian Orthoptic Council, and has been practicing orthoptics with the Saskatoon Health Region since 1991, first at Royal University Hospital, and now with the Eye Care Center at Saskatoon City Hospital.
Jocelyn has been active within The Canadian Orthoptic Society (Co-President 2003-04), The Canadian Consortium of Orthoptic Training Programs, and The American Association of Certified Orthoptists Education Committee. She holds an editorial board position with the American Orthoptic Journal, and is author and co-author of 8 papers and presentations.
Jocelyn is currently the Educator of the Saskatoon Health Region Orthoptic Program. Her duties include both didactic and clinical teaching with orthoptic students, and Ophthalmology Residents as well as mentoring medical students in ophthalmology research.
